Jan's tech blog all about : p2p, IT-security, web 2.0., Skype, VoIP, living in Malaysia, internet, web. Testing a lot of gadgets here also. If it has not been tested here, it probably does not work (very well).
no comment on ... "Skype vs. 3G iPhone The "Independent" Skype Journal
(aka The Skype Cheerleading Squad) has published a list of "advantages"
of Skype over the 3G iPhone. Unfortunately, the very first item on
their list highlights one of the major flaws in Skype. They list
"Sharing your availability and mood message" - in fact, Skype has
tremendous problems with accurately showing availability (or presence),
to the point where in many cases it is basically random information
with no real significance."
Smile when you read this skype for iphone. "We moved to s4iphone.com Please, update your bookmark. You will be automatically redirected in 5 seconds. www.skypeforiphone.com" They probably got a scary letter from the lawyer already. The pictures are unrelated by the way. Just something I found on flickr.comMy take is it is stupid of both 3skypephone, Apple Iphone to force the user into a certain network. If they did not lock their phones into deals with x,y,z then nobody would have to hack it... It's as stupid as trying to sell computers that can only link up to certain internet access providers. Amyways who cares. Maybe soonr or laterr. See here how soonr.com does it as explained on youtube.
I thought I heard somewhere that these Apple Iphone devices where not supposed to be sold yet in Malaysia and would only arrive in 2008, so how come I spotted some already on sale in Sungei Wang (close to Bukit Bintan). I had to keep the movie short... to crowded, but it surely a cool device, I actually held on in my hand.
There was a little note in the display also that stated that you should not update this device online, because it could loose it's connection... Hahahahaa. They were probably referring to the tweaks that can be applied to free it. Yet the salesguy told me that this Apple Iphone would work with any carrier. Any simcard. In Hong Kong on the other hand, these Apple Iphones where display with the note "unlocked Iphone" or hte cracked Iphone, tweaked Iphone..." things like that. Eitherways, my opinion is that a cellphone should work on a any carrier it's simcard/service. Otherwise I'll be calling apple to make sure I can keep my cellphone number... Got the point ? It's stupid that a phone, even an apple phone is locked into a specific networks. People want freedom... Besides, I find it rediculous (businesswise) that consumers we'll have to revert to hackers and crackers to free their Iphone... I am sure the other manufacturers are making jokes about that... The same story is probably true for the 3skypephone. I don't understand how marketeers, product developers can accept to come on the market with a phone that will only work with certain networks. It's rediculous. People don't want that. People have an existing simcard and they will want to keep their number and have it done all officially. Not some hacked Apple Iphone or 3skypephone... Many will think "ow, Apple or the carrier / phone company will know and cut me off". Hence the only option is to free the Apple Iphone. Same goes for the 3skypephone and make it carrier independant. Only then it will sell outside of the scope of geeks... The future will tell. Mark my words. Maybe I am right, maybe I am wrong.
In the Apple stores in Malaysia there is no Apple Iphone to be spotted... yet.
In Malaysia, at that booth they asked a price about 3000 RM for this phone... Wow ! Of course it's much more than a phone... but still too expensive.

Made-in-Malaysia iPhone interface has Apple running scared. In a follow up to our story last week, Apple Inc, the manufacturer of the yet-to-be-released iPhone ( who themselves are in a tussle with Cisco over the use of the iPhone name) have claimed copyright to a video filmed by a Malaysian programmer which was uploaded to YouTube.com."
Apple is Reportedly Making $831 Per iPhone, which makes me immediately think it will be needed to report how much Skype / 3 make with the 3skypephone, to convince the market (any part in it). What does eBay get from this revenue by 3 via Skype anyways ?
I really don't care about all this justified mumbo jumbo. When I go Mobile with Skype, I would like to call any IM/VoIP from my Skype phone. Interconnectivity please. Open standards thank you. Time to get of your isolated Island Skype. Open up to SIP.
"Have you hacked your iPhone so that you can use carriers other than AT&T, or for other reasons? If so, you're phone may be rendered useless by a software update that Apple is sending out. " source : Hacked iPhones to be Permanently Off-Lined
Anthony keeps throwing me interesting Iphone links. He must surely want one, being a Mac adapt (hihihi). Here is one on how soon the hackers would get wifi VOIP running on the iPod.
My take is very simple : if the IM / VoIP companies, network providers and manufacturers, won't provide proper interconnectivity then it will happen via hacking and tweaking.
Consumers (business and normal) want their VoIP phones to be like cellphone : call and be call by anybody without having to switch network.
The IM that stay on an Island will die. This is my explanation for the lack of interest in Skype phones. Certainly the mobile versions. Skype cannot be called by anything else than Skype … A crucial mistake. Yeah okay, you can call via the PSTN over Skype in numbers.. Okay, it's a start. The common denominator that brings IM on one platform is still PSTN.
