According to Gartner, the number of workers telecommuting at least 1 day per week has doubled to 12 million since 2000. That number is expected to grow to 14+ million in 2009 as companies look for ways to cut costs and improve their bottom line. Naturally, companies are turning to IT management to provide the technology, training, support and procedures needed to balance an efficient workforce with a secure and stable IT environment.

If your company has a remote workforce or is planning to expand the number of telecommuting workers in 2009, then you are facing these challenges. Wouldn't it be nice to benefit from all the days (and weeks) of work that IT managers in the field have already completed to create the various documentation and policy templates you need to successfully manage an external workforce?

If you answered "yes" to that question, the Telecommuting Resource Kit provides just what you need to get your arms around the telecommuting challenge. This unique and time-tested collection of templates comes from our partners at ITManagersToolkit.com who compiled this documentation from top IT Managers in the field who serve at enterprises of all sizes.

skype_logo.pngTonight out at the "ShowStoppers" event at MacWorld in San Francisco, Skype announced the new 2.8 Beta for Mac OS X. The new version will apparently be available for download tomorrow, January 6, 2009, from Skype's website. [NOTE: I will update this post with the download link when it becomes available.]

Continuing Skype's rather fragmented <http://www.disruptivetelephony.com/2008/12/skype-launches-40-beta-3-still-o nly-on-windows-and-still-a-fragmented-product-strategy.html> product strategy, they have rolled out some new features in this 2.8 beta release that will at least stop us Mac users from whining about Windows users always getting the good stuff first. Here's the quick list of what Skype notes is in this release:

*	Skype Access
*	Screen Sharing
*	Improved chat management: ability to sort chats in the drawer and set priorities to chats
*	Quick Add: much easier to add people to chats
*	Mood message chat: mood message updates from your friends as chat messages
*	Large avatars: 256x256 pixels
*	Hidden avatars in incoming contact requests
*	Ability to add your own notes to contacts

Courtesy of Skype's PR team, I've had a chance to play with the 2.8 beta for a couple of weeks and have these thoughts below...

Sent: Tuesday, 6 January, 2009 10:08 AM To: jan@skypejournal.com Subject: TRUPHONE INTRODUCES SKYPE CALLING AND INSTANT MESSAGING TO iPHONE AND iPOD TOUCH APPLICATIONS

Dear Jan, Truphone is keeping with their tradition of innovation and kicking off the new year with a new Skype feature that will allow iPhone and iPod Touch users to make calls and instant message other Skype users. All you need is a Truphone account. Two press releases appear below with the details.

This new feature goes live to consumers the week of Jan. 12, but we want you to give it a try now. If you have an iPhone or iTouch and a Truphone account, simply provide me (sue.huss@comunicano.com) with your name, the name of your media outlet or blog, email address and Truphone ID. A representative from Truphone will send you the log in details. If you don't have a Truphone account and want to try out the Skype feature, simply download the iPhone or iPod Touch application from the Apple Store and send me the contact details I requested above. We look forward to hearing what you think about the Skype feature.

I am also happy to provide further information or schedule a briefing with CEO Geraldine Wilson.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TRUPHONE INTRODUCES SKYPE CALLING AND INSTANT MESSAGING TO iPHONE AND iPOD TOUCH APPLICATIONS

London and San Francisco-Jan. 6, 2009-Truphone <http://www.truphone.com> today debuted the ability to make and receive SkypeT calls and instant messaging (IM) to the entire Skype user base from its iPhoneT and iPod touchT applications. The service is scheduled to be available to all customers during the week of Jan. 12.

The introduction was made at "ShowStoppers @ Macworld 2009" and will be showcased at the Truphone stand (#3228) at Macworld for the remainder of the week.

This represents one more step toward making Truphone the open "all-in-one conversations hub" for iPhone and iPod touch users.
Truphone customers on both Apple devices can now reach their Skype friends via their Skype IDs. This further expands the universe of people with whom Truphone customers can stay in touch.

Separately, Truphone also announced today the availability of well-known instant-messaging services using the Truphone application on the iPod touchT and the iPhoneT.

"The introduction of Skype calling and instant messaging represents yet another breakthrough for Truphone," said Geraldine Wilson, Truphone CEO. "What this means for Truphone's customers is that they can now call or message all their Skype friends using their iPhone or iPod touch. This allows iPhone and iPod touch users to have a choice in how they stay in touch with friends and colleagues around the world-all within the one application."

Truphone-to-Skype communications are free over the Internet, and iPhone users can also place and receive Skype calls and messages when not in a Wi-Fi-accessible location for the cost of a local call*, using the Truphone Anywhere feature.

* Operator roaming charges will apply if users are abroad.

Notes to editors 1. Skype reports more than 300 million downloads of its software. Typically, upwards of 13 million users may be online at any one time. 2. Both Truphone for iPhone and Truphone for iPod touch are free to download from the App Store. Neither application has any rental, subscription or other hidden charges. 3. For current Truphone call rates, see www.truphone.com/pricing.
4. Making a Truphone call on an iPhone or iPod touch couldn't be simpler: Truphone displays a virtual keypad for dialling the number. 5. Wi-Fi hotspots are commonplace in offices, schools, campuses, at home, and even across entire town and city centres. Truphone uses the Wi-Fi connectivity of the iPhone/iPod touch to carry instant messages over the Internet to its destination.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TRUPHONE ADDS INSTANT MESSAGING AND TWITTER
TO ITS iPHONE AND iPOD TOUCH APPLICATIONS

London and San Francisco-Jan. 6, 2009-Truphone <http://www.truphone.com> today introduced full two-way instant messaging over MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk on the iPod touchT and also announced that availability on the iPhoneT would begin the week of Jan. 12.

Customers can also make and receive voice calls on Google Talk; calling functionality will be added to MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger in the coming weeks.

Truphone has also integrated Twitter into the TruFriends view so users can see what friends are talking about and post from within the Truphone application.

"We understand that customers increasingly want more integrated communications and like to switch between chat and voice," said Truphone CEO Geraldine Wilson. "With these new features, Truphone customers can now choose which mode of communications they want to use at any moment-all from within the one application. This represents another step towards making Truphone the open 'all-in-one conversations hub' for iPhone and iPod touch users."

The introduction was made at "ShowStoppers @ Macworld 2009" and will be showcased at the Truphone booth (#3228) at Macworld for the remainder of the week.

Separately, Truphone also announced today the introduction of Skype calling and instant messaging when using the Truphone application on the iPhone and iPod touch.

Customers of Truphone for both the iPhone and iPod touch can now very simply import all their contacts from these accounts to Truphone and chat with them from the Truphone interface. The Truphone client on both devices shows who is online with its built-in presence functionality.

Instant messages are always free of charge to send and receive when in a Wi-Fi environment. iPhone users can also instant message when out of Wi-Fi range; data charges will be covered in the customers unlimited data package*. Truphone will also add the same functionality to other leading instant messaging services throughout the year.

* Operator roaming charges will apply when abroad and not using a Wi-Fi network.

“ Internet and phone communications between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia have been seriously disrupted after submarine cables were severed. It is thought the FLAG FEA, SMW4, and SMW3 lines, near the Alexandria cable station in Egypt, have all been cut. A fault was also reported on the GO submarine cable 130km off Sicily.

Hence, I wanted more speed and more DL/UL capacity.

So I wondered (since we can pay over the phone with a creditcard) if I could upgrade my line to 2.4 GB but that seems not to be possible over the phone. Note that I am already a customer. The solution by the agent on the phone suggested is to drive (half day waste of time if you ask me) to the P1 office somewhere in Petaling Jaya, sign the piece of paper there and repeat the credit card number.

In my opinion that is the way to loose customers. Normally it would be very easy to send a fax (maybe they don't know www.efax.com there yet ?) ask for a signature, let the payment come in and then deliver the modem or let the customer pick it up in the city somewhere or at a local dealer.

But instead they prefer to send a guy on a motorcycle carrying a bunch of paper (1st signup they actually did that) to an office 20km away, then let the customer sign, the drive back 20 another 20 km.

So far the advantages of faxes and usage of for example PDF.

I wonder what kind or relevance such money wasting procedures have. I am still waiting (already gave my creditcard details twice) over the phone and I still don't have an answer.

They will probably keep their leg stiff instead of upgrading my line.

What kind of advantages does such a marketing have ? In my opinion none. Not making it easy for customers to upgrade and ask people (your own staff including) to run around with document while they can be faxed (faster, better, cheaper) is a waste of (my) time, resources and mind you : I am still not upgrade.

What geniusses have put such procedures in place ?

When in a IM/ internet company the decision are made by the financials and marketeers only, then not much innovation will occur... The techies should be the ones driving the technology.

Looks interesting this google friend connect service. Everything is going to be pro-actively linked, if not
already... I wonder about privacy and security issues...

"This service lets webmasters add social features to their sites by
simply copying and pasting a few snippets of code - no advanced coding
or technical background required.

Friend Connect makes it easy
for users to sign in to a website, share a bit about themselves through
a personal profile, discover other people with similar interests,
invite their contacts, and interact with friends, all through their
existing account from Google, Yahoo, AOL, or OpenID.

Users can
choose to to either establish a new profile or use profiles and friend
sources from other social networks that have opened up their services,
like Plaxo and Orkut.

Google's been working with a handful of
website owners, social networks, and application developers to improve
Friend Connect's speed and scalability, ease of use, and customization
capabilities. They've also expanded the features available to users
with more integrated profiles and new ways to discuss and share
content, like including YouTube videos in comments.

Websites
that use Friend Connect become OpenSocial containers, capable of
running applications created by the OpenSocial developer community." source.
